Outdoor Spaces
At Piedmont Progressive Preschool, we believe that children thrive when they are free to explore, create, and connect with the natural world. Our thoughtfully designed outdoor spaces reflect our commitment to play-based, nature-rooted learning—offering children daily opportunities to engage their senses, spark their curiosity, and grow their confidence in a setting that encourages movement, collaboration, and wonder.
Mud Kitchen
Our beloved mud kitchen is a hub of imaginative play. Here, children mix, pour, and pretend using natural materials like soil, water, leaves, and sticks—transforming into chefs, potion-makers, or builders with boundless creativity. This space fosters sensory exploration, social cooperation, and rich language development, all while connecting children to the earth in hands-on ways.

Garden Space
Our garden is a living classroom where children observe the seasons, learn to care for plants, and experience the joy of growing food. From planting seeds to harvesting vegetables, students gain an understanding of cycles, patience, and responsibility. The garden also supports our curriculum by integrating science, storytelling, and sensory experiences into daily life.
Creek Area
Thoughtfully designed and engineered by our talented parent volunteers, our creek area is a well-loved feature of the playground. With gently running water and a natural layout, it invites children to splash, build, and explore. Whether they’re constructing dams, floating leaves downstream, or simply feeling the cool water on a warm day, the creek becomes a place of joy, imagination, and open-ended play. It offers children a dynamic, sensory-rich environment where creativity flows as freely as the water itself.

Soundgarden
Our soundgarden adds a whimsical, musical dimension to outdoor play. With instruments made from natural and recycled materials, children explore rhythm, tone, and creative expression in the open air. This space supports sensory development and provides a peaceful, joyful outlet for self-expression and collaboration.
Natural Playground
Our playground blends the best of both worlds—inviting open-ended exploration while offering the timeless joy of childhood classics. A thoughtfully designed wooden play structure features swings, slides, and a climbing wall, all constructed with natural materials that harmonize with the surrounding environment. Nearby, a geometric climbing dome encourages coordination, strength, and cooperative play. Whether they’re building with loose parts, scaling the dome, or inventing games beneath the trees, children are free to challenge their bodies, build resilience, and experience the deep satisfaction of unstructured outdoor play.

Natural Fairy Garden
Tucked beside a quiet stairway, our natural fairy garden was lovingly created by one of our preschool parents using materials like bark, moss, stones, and logs. This whimsical space invites wonder and discovery, becoming a favorite hideaway for lizards, toads, and other small critters. Children are drawn to its tiny details and often begin their day by checking in to see who might be visiting. More than just a charming corner, the fairy garden encourages observation, storytelling, and a deepened connection to the small magic of the natural world.
